With the two year anniversary of Eric Garner’s death approaching, the Staten Island man having been strangled by police as he pleaded for breath, the country now mourns yet another black American killed by police, as video has emerged Wednesday morning (July 6) showing two white police officers shooting 37-year-old Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, despite the fact that they had him pinned.

Police responded to a complaint that stated that a black male wearing a red shirt was selling CDs and had threatened someone with a gun. In the video below which we do warn contains disturbing footage, the officers can be seen tackling Sterling to the ground, with one shouting “He’s got a gun” and then “he’s going for the gun,” before firing shots. The cell phone video then cuts out as those recording it respond to the incident.

Many in the hip-hop community have voiced their outrage at the contents of the video, with Fabolous asking, “When is America & the judicial system that’s suppose to protect us, gonna make these officers who are killing black men take responsibility for what’s going on.” Charlamagne of “The Breakfast Club” wrote, “Said it once and I’ll say it a million times. As a black American I fear the police way more than Isis.”

The two officers have been place on administrative leave with a full investigation to be conducted. “This is not going to be a coverup,” Baton Rouge Mayor-President Kip Holden said. For additional quotes and details, visit The Washington Post.

Does this face scare you? Would you cross the street if he asked if you wanted to buy a DVD? Would you even answer the question? We need to reprogram. Our nations past bleeds into our present by raising us to think black is something to fear. The police officer that killed him was so scared of the idea of a black man with a gun that it didn't matter if he was reaching for it or threatening at all. That fear took a father, a son, and a brother off of the earth all at the same time. If you're reading this and wondering if he deserved to die I want you to look yourself in the eye. Tell yourself that he was a human being with a family. A family that will never be the same. Tell yourself that you don't need to fear a man just because of the color of his skin. Tell yourself that his blood bleeds red just like yours. Tell yourself he feels fear just like you do. Tell yourself that he feels love just like you do. Tell yourself that you love him. Then go and tell your friends the same. We have to REPROGRAM. "Once you change your philosophy, you change your thought pattern. Once you change your thought pattern, you change your attitude. Once you change your attitude, it changes your behavior pattern and then you go on into some action." – MALCOLM X We have to change. And it starts with each of us.
