With rappers generally catching the majority of the shine in hip hop, often the sizeable contributions from producers making genre shaping sounds can get a bit overlooked. One such innovator, Lowpass Luke is well worth putting firmly on your radar. Over the last couple of years, the Birmingham based creator has been refining his style and seemingly has something of a golden touch as his early output has already had a hand in the rise of a couple of big names. Here’s 3 reasons to keep an eye on Luke…
Jafro – Go
The last year has seen Leicester grime prodigy Jafro begin to gain the level of notoriety he deserves. With one of the cleanest deliveries of multi-syllabic punches to ever emerge and a formidable grasp of melody and hook writing, its not surprising that he’s caught widespread attention from SBTV to Lord Of The Mics. In addition to joint producing the whole of Jafro’s impressive debut EP Peace, Love and Sauce alongside Leicester producer Maniscooler, Lowpass stayed on board to produce 2 tracks (‘132’ and ‘Go’) off Jafro’s debut album The Greatest Playlist Ever. Literally every instance of the two of them linking up results in a hard tune.
TrueMendous – Half Action Man, Half Barbie
it’s no secret that Team UKHH are big TrueMendous fans. So this one feels like an obvious choice for inclusion. As mentioned, Lowpass Luke seems to be developing an unusual knack for racking up production credits with artists set to blow. ‘Half Action Man, Half Barbie’ was the penultimate visual to drop before True’s music started appearing over on High Focus and raised her profile massively. With an approach to churning out bangers that see’s Luke draw on varying genres from one tune to the next, its no small feat that despite the versatility there are motifs and trademark tones that make Luke’s sonic landscape distinctive. Beyond a signature warmth and wavyness, regularly employing ethereal keys is a regular feature of his beat-making which is evident in the piano line of this TrueMendous heater.
Sane – Blue Love
A tour of the Lowpass back catalogue wouldn’t be complete without a look at the consistently dope music he’s made with his longest standing collaborator, Sane. Yet another criminally unsung talent from the surprising creative powerhouse of Leicester, the rapper/singer has been working alongside Luke for years now. The two of them have been fine-tuning their sounds in unison resulting in a polished vibe that’s unique to the duo. With two accomplished EPs to date, Growing Backwards and this year’s The Moving EP (which dropped on UKHH.com affiliates Brain Scran Records), the Sane x Lowpass body of work thusfar is rewarding listening. Think grounded, personal lyricism and effortlessly smooth melodies over beats to steal someones girlfriend to. Don’t sleep.
