It's a belated Christmas Mariah-cle! Mariah Carey scores a first in the history of the Billboard Hot 100 this week (on the chart dated Jan. 4, 2020) as her holiday hit "All I Want for Christmas Is You" spends its third week at No. 1, making Carey the only artist ever to rank at No. 1 on the Hot 100 in four distinct decades.
Carey had 14 leaders in the 1990s and four in the 2000s, while her 1994 Christmas jingle has carried her into the 2010s (first leading on the lists dated Dec. 21 and 28, 2019) and, now, the 2020s.
Carey passes eight artists in Hot 100 history to have placed at No. 1 in three different decades. Stevie Wonder continuously churned out leaders in the '60s, '70s and '80s; Michael Jackson and Elton John followed suit in the '70s, '80s and '90s; Janet Jackson and Madonna had No. 1 songs in the '80s, '90s and '00s; and Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears and Usher all occupied the Hot 100 penthouse in the '90s, '00s and '10s.
