Kelly Clarkson joined Brooke Reese FaceTime on Apple Music on Monday (April 20) to discuss her multi-language single “I Dare You,” her top five tracks on Apple Music and more.
“The whole idea came from my head, because I grew up singing different languages, and I always thought it would be really cool to be able to do a song in different languages, and I just had never had the perfect song,” she said of “I Dare You,” which dropped last week. “And this song was such a… It could be a cheesy message if not done right. So Jesse Shatkin produced it where it had tempo, and it had kind of a little edge to it to where it was kind of really cool. So I thought that was kind of a nice juxtaposition from the really sweet meaningful lyric, but it’s also a dark lyric.”
“Then this whole thing happened around the world that was so globally connecting, that was kind of insane for this song to come out at this time,” she continued. “So we just kept the release date.”
Clarkson and Reese also went through the pop star’s top five songs on Apple Music, which included “Piece by Piece,” “Love So Soft,” “Because of You” and “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You.”
On the No. 1 song, 2002’s “Since U Been Gone,” Clarkson noted, “I love what the song does for people, I love that it was very different in demo form sent to me. Behind the scenes, it was not so fun to record because of situations I won’t talk about, because I won’t sell people out.”
“But I will say, my favorite memory, if I’m being more positive about it, was the fact that I got to show up to a video shoot and completely trash an apartment, and that was my job,” she continued. “That video was possibly one of my favorite videos ever to make, because literally I just got to just have rage, and just break stuff all day long.”
“So although it has a lot of backstory for me personally, that’s not my favorite. I do love that… I’m still able to be on stage though, and ‘I can compartmentalize like the best of them,’ says every woman,” she concluded. “But I can compartmentalize that emotion, and focus on the fun part of it, because it’s fun, the audience loves the song, they connect to it. And whatever, it’s fine, I would have rather… If I had to repeat it again, I would rather go through all that crap to get the end product of really connecting with a bunch of fans, and people that might not have been Kelly Clarkson fans before.”
