During the Stonewall Day livestream benefit, pop singer Katy Perry made a special appearance to speak directly to her LGBTQ fans, thanking them for their support and asking in return how she can help them this month.
“Usually on Pride I’m thinking, ‘What total banger can I dance to that will fill my heart with joy?'” she said. “But this Pride, I’m really focused on ways I can be of service. How can I help organizations like the beneficiaries Pride Live is recognizing today that need extra support in these compelling times? And how can I use my privilege and my platform to support the movement towards justice and equality?”
Perry spoke about how that mission is one she feels dedicated to, especially with a child on the way. “The wish I have for my child is that she’ll be happy, and healthy and safe,” she said, before making a point to call out names of black lives taken by police. “It’s the same wish every mother has for their kid. It’s the wish that Trayvon (Martin)’s mom had, and Breonna (Taylor)’s and George (Floyd)’s and Tony (McDade)’s and the list is too damn long.”
The star concluded her statement, letting the community know that she was here to “listen, learn and take action” to support LGBTQ people year-round, not just one month out of the year. “Thank you LGBTQ for letting me part of your Pride and part of your lives, and know that you inspire me with your strength and your perseverance on Stonewall Day and every day.”
Perry was just one of many stars who were set to appear throughout the livestream event, including Taylor Swift, President Barack Obama, Kesha, Demi Lovato and more.
