The American Music Awards will air as a three-hour show on Sunday Nov. 22, ABC and dick clark productions announced today (July 17).
The show has been telecast from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles since 2007. No venue was specified in the first release announcing the show. The release made no mention of the COVID-19 pandemic that has upended the awards show schedule this year, forcing some shows to be held online. The release notes only: “Additional details regarding production of the show will be announced at a later date.”
Last year’s show, held on Nov. 24, 2019, delivered ABC’s biggest entertainment audience in adults 18-49 on a Sunday night since the Oscars nine months earlier. Ciara hosted the show, at which Taylor Swift won six awards, including artist of the decade. This sweep enabled her to surpass Michael Jackson as the top winner in the show’s history.
BTS and Khalid also won big, with three awards each.
American Music Awards, which were created by legendary producer Dick Clark, first aired in February 1974. They honor artists in multiple genres, including pop/rock, alternative rock, country, rap/hip-hop, soul/R&B, adult contemporary, contemporary inspirational, Latin, EDM and soundtrack. There are also awards for new artist, collaboration, video, song and artist of the year.
AMA nominees are based on key fan interactions as reflected in Billboard and on Billboard.com, including album and digital song sales, radio airplay, streaming, social activity and touring. These measurements are tracked by Billboard and its data partners, including Nielsen Music/MRC Data and Next Big Sound.
