Big Sean was put in a tough position after Kanye West and JAY-Z told him to fire his friend.
During his appearance on “Drink Champs,” the Detroit rapper shared a story about recording My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy in Hawaii and bringing one of his homies along as a support system.
“He was gonna help hold me down,” said Sean. “It’s good to just have a support system, it’s good to have one of your homies there when you tryna contribute.”
While in the studio one day, Sean’s friend ending up taking a “sneak picture” of Ye, Hov, and Beyoncé in the studio and tweeted it out. The photo made its way around the internet, and Ye and JAY-Z were not happy about it.
“They came at me and they thought it was me,” said Sean. “It didn’t even make sense because I wasn’t even on at that time and it was like Kanye, JAY-Z, Beyoncé, Big Sean… People were like, ‘Who the f**k is Big Sean?’ It looked like I planted this shit.”
Ye confronted Sean about the photo and told him to fire his friend because it made Sean look “thirsty.” “I explained to him who it was and he was like, ‘You gotta fu**in’ fire him.’ He was like, ‘We’ve all done this. We’ve hired the people that we love,’” recalled Sean.
So Sean had to have a difficult conversation with his friend and tell him that he needed to go. “I’m sorry, bro, we gotta figure out something else,” he told him.
But it all worked out for the best as his friend went to become a teacher. “It ended up being a blessing in disguise,” he said. “He ended up transforming his life and being probably way more successful than he would have been just in the position he was in.”
While speaking with N.O.R.E. and DJ EFN’s podcast, Sean also responded to Kanye’s comments saying that signing Sean to G.O.O.D. Music was the “worst thing I’ve ever done.”
“That was some bullshit what he said,†he said. “I love Kanye, bro. I love him for the opportunity he gave me and all these things, but I thought what he said was some bitch ass shit.â€
