The remarkable journey of Will Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff, who transitioned from Philadelphia teenagers to pioneers of mainstream hip-hop, is set to be immortalized on screen. Westbrook Studios, the production company founded by Smith, is currently developing a scripted television series titled 215, which will explore the duo’s formative years in the Wynnefield neighborhood of Philadelphia.
The series aims to capture the essence of the late 1980s and early 1990s hip-hop scene, following a young rapper and DJ as they navigate the complexities of pursuing a record deal, the pressures of sudden fame, and the impact of their success on their personal relationships and hometown roots. The project serves as a nostalgic look back at a defining era for both the artists and the city of Philadelphia.
Reflecting on the project, Terence Carter, president of television at Westbrook Studios, stated, “215 is especially meaningful to us because it draws from the rise of DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince and celebrates Philadelphia during such a defining era in the city’s late-’80s/early-’90s hip-hop scene.”
The duo first crossed paths at a house party in West Philadelphia in 1985. Their immediate musical chemistry led to the formation of DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince, culminating in the massive commercial success of their 1988 album, He’s the DJ, I’m the Rapper. This milestone helped cement their status as one of the first acts to bring hip-hop into the mainstream spotlight, paving the way for Smith’s eventual transition into a global Hollywood icon.
While the series is currently in the development phase, it does not yet have a confirmed network, streaming platform, cast, or release date. Westbrook Studios is collaborating on the project with the Canadian production company The Malar Group, marking the beginning of a broader partnership between the two entities.
