ASICS Looks to the Early 2000s With Latest GEL-KAYANO 14 and GEL-NYC Series

Japanese sportswear brand ASICS is gearing up to launch an all-new generation of GEL-KAYANO 14, GEL-NYC, EX89, GEL-LYTE V and GEL-LYTE III OG running shoes. The new generation offers a variety of models in neutral and neon colorways powered by the brand’s iconic GEL technology, offering elevated performance capabilities in reimagined silhouettes.

ASICS GEL technology is known for its feather-like and nimble construction, providing advanced support and comfort underfoot, ideal for everyday adventures and intensive training. The latest series aims to convey a new perception of the retro running shape, creating a distinguished nod to the early 2000s. The GEL-KAYANO 14, in particular, marks the first-ever model designed by someone other than Toshikazu Kayano, creator of the original GEL-KAYANO TRAINER, released in 1993. The GEL-KAYANO line has since become an instrumental cornerstone of the brand, inspiring an arsenal of tech-infused models.

Though ASICS’ legacy as a go-to option for high-mileage runners and cross-training athletes still reverberates within the franchise, the updated GEL series fuse a combination of heritage and retro-inspired design elements geared towards the fashion set. For instance, the GEL-LYTE V model incorporates the Japanese concept of boro, featuring a textured patchwork motif by fusing Okayama Denim and a nylon flight jacket material throughout the upper. The resulting look pays homage to Kayano’s original geometric construction while revamping its multidimensional appearance.

Capturing this distinct aesthetic, ASICS has teamed up with creative agency Baby Joon to style the sneakers in an upcoming lookbook shot in Paris. Stay tuned to see ASICS’ latest models in action, and check out the GEL-KAYANO line on ASICS’ website.
