Billie Eilish takes her directing skills to the next (sea) level in her music video for "Everything I Wanted," released Thursday (Jan. 23).
She dedicates the clip to her brother and frequent collaborator Finneas, who makes an endearing appearance in the video as he sits in the passenger seat of a sleek black car Eilish drives throughout the night. Right within the opening remark, the 18-year-old singer-director writes, "finneas is my brother and my best friend. no matter the circumstance, we always have and always will be there for each other."
And the circumstance isn't as cool as the Los Angeles scenery they pass by after the "Bad Guy" artist takes their cruise beachside, or rather cuts right through the sand and plunges into the ocean. Dusk settles in, the blended shades of blue and purple matching the ominous ballad Eilish sings and Finneas later joins in at the chorus.
"And you say, 'As long as I'm here, no one can hurt you/ Don't wanna lie here, but you can learn to/ If I could change the way you see yourself/ You wouldn't wonder why you hear "they don't deserve you,"'" the siblings harmonize about Finneas' encouraging words to his little sister. In multiple interviews, the "Everything I Wanted" singer has said this melancholy record delves into her worst fears of people not caring if something bad happened to her, but reassures her that Finneas always would.
"My brother and I wrote this song about each other and I wanted to create a visual that emphasizes that no matter what, we’ll be there for each other through everything.” she said in a press release. “This is the second video I’ve directed of mine. We worked so hard, for hours and hours on end. I love it, I hope you do too."
One of the most touching visuals in the clip comes at the 3-minute mark, when the two hold hands while the car further submerges into the deep and dark ocean to further illustrate an "us against the world" scene.
