Blackpink's Lisa: 5 Things You Need To Know

Blackpink‘s Lisa became even more of a viral phenomenon this week when a video of her dancing to 6lack and Quin‘s 2019 single “Mushroom Chocolate” in a pair of thigh-high, heeled boots sparked a hilarious meme challenge across social media.

Using screenshots from the clip, everyone from Dolly Parton and Lil Nas X to Stephen Colbert and James Corden soon got in on the fun, captioning cropped pictures of themselves connected to Lisa’s enble legs with “Did it work?”

Of course, the K-pop idol is known for much more than a social media trend. As one-fourth of Blackpink, she’s an integral part of one of music history’s most popular girl groups, having earned five No. 1 hits on the Billboard World Digital Song Sales chart including “Boombayah,” “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du” and “Kill This Love,” as well as millions of fans the world over, her very own Billboard cover and a soon-to-be-released collaboration with none other than Lady Gaga.

Below, Billboard rounded up five things you need to know about Lisa.

She passed her K-pop training with flying colors

Unlike the American concept of pop music fame, the training process to join Blackpink was rigorous and years-long. After auditioning in her native Thailand in 2010, Lisa moved to Seoul, where she took part in a kind of pop star academy put on by the band’s label, YG Entertainment. Training seven days a week for 12 hours a day alongside roughly two dozen other girls, Lisa and her future bandmates were graded in monthly tests on their singing, dancing and rapping abilities.

Despite not speaking any Korean upon arriving in South Korea in 2011, Lisa aced the five-year training process, consistently being evaluated at the top of the proverbial class. “You get a score — A, B, C,” she told Billboard of the experience in Blackpink’s February 2019 cover story, before her bandmate Jennie jumped in to reveal, “Lisa would always get A’s for everything.”

She’s the best dancer in the group

Among Blackpink’s ardently loyal fanbase, known as Blinks, Lisa is renowned for her dance skills. She regularly uploads solo dance videos to her personal YouTube channel — including her most recent, meme-generating clip — nailing intricate choreography to Rosalía‘s “Malamente” and DaniLeigh‘s “Cravin” with equal parts swagger and panache.

The rest of Blackpink also point to Lisa as the member with the most coveted moves, with Rosé referring to her as “the dancing machine of our group” in their Billboard cover story.

She’s a fashion icon

In Jan. 2019, photographer, fashion designer and artistic director for French luxury brand Celine Hedi Slimane reportedly selected Lisa as his latest muse. The K-pop star went on to sit front row at the Celine runway presentation during Paris Men’s Fashion Week in June 2019, and later modeled several looks curated by Slimane during a visit to the fashion house’s Paris headquarters. Lisa also regularly wears the label in both her street style and during promotional appearances, landing her in the pages of Vogue, V Magazine and other prominent fashion publications.

She’s Blackpink’s class clown…but also shy

In a game of “How Well Do You Know Your Bandmates?” during their Billboard cover shoot, the other members of Blackpink unanimously named Lisa as the one to embarrass herself in front of her crush. “Lisa just makes a lot of jokes; she’s like a class clown,” Rosé dished. “Yeah,” Jennie agreed. “She would be the one making jokes, but when we put her in the spot, she gets really shy.”

She’s the most-followed K-pop idol on all of social media

Boasting 32.3 million followers, Lisa remains the most-followed K-pop star on Instagram. Coincidentally, her bandmates make up the rest of the top four, with Jennie coming in second with 26.1 million, Rosé in third with 23.5 million and Jisoo in fourth with 22 million. The band also made history in November 2019 when the visual for their hit single “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du” became the first K-pop video to reach one billion views on YouTube.
