Blake Shelton joined in on the current #DeepCutsChallenge that Tim McGraw started in March as a way to entertain fans and his fellow artists in the midst of quarantine. Carly Pearce challenged Shelton, her former tour mate, after providing a stirring cover of Patty Loveless’ “Sorrowful Angels.”
“I am going to challenge who I think is the king of deep cuts … He is truly one of the best country vocalists we will ever have in the genre. Blake Shelton, you’re up,” Pearce said in a video shot in her Nashville home.
In his video, Shelton admits he learned of the challenge from girlfriend Gwen Stefani. While seated beside a fire outside of his Oklahoma home, Shelton chose to cover Wynonna’s “Only Love.” The song was featured on Wynonna’s sophomore album, Tell Me Why, and peaked at No. 3 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs on Sept. 24, 1993.
“I’m not gonna back down from a challenge from you, Carly,” Shelton said. “I thought I would do this song since I’m just sitting around here tonight anyway. This is one of my favorite Wynonna songs. It’s probably in my top two favorite Wynonna songs, and I’ve been thinking a lot about this song lately anyway. I’m probably going to screw it up. If I do, get over it.”
Decked out in camo, Shelton strummed Judd’s “Only Love” on an acoustic guitar while the fire crackled behind him. The cover highlighted just why Pearce credited Shelton as being “one of the best country vocalists” with his memorable version.
