Brittany Howard Covers Funkadelic's 'You And Your Folks, Me And My Folks'

Brittany Howard unveiled her wailing take on Funkadelic‘s “You and Your Folks, Me and My Folks” for Spotify Singles on Wednesday (April 15).

On the rollicking cover, the Alabama Shakes frontwoman updates the lead single from the psychedelic rock outfit’s classic 1971 album Maggot Brain as a clarion call for trust and unity in these increasingly precarious times. “But if in our fears, we don’t learn to trust each other/ And if in our tears, we don’t learn to share with your brother/ You know that hate is gonna keep on multiplying/ And you know that man is gonna keep right on dying,” she intones over smoldering electric guitar and crashing drums on the track’s first verse.

Howard also released a glowing, stripped-down take on her 2019 single “Stay High” along with the Funkadelic cover. Released as the second single on her debut solo album Jamie, “Stay High” peaked at the top of the Adult Alternative Songs chart for three consecutive weeks back in October 2019.

The songs were recorded at East West Studios in Los Angeles instead of New York City’s Lady Studios, where most of the Spotify Singles are done. Check out both of Howard’s Spotify Singles below.
