On his own merit, BTS‘ Suga continues to rack up accolades as a featured rapper, songwriter and producer. He teamed up with K-pop singer-songwriter IU on her comeback single “Eight” today (May 6).
But the South Korean-based hitmaker started taking the world by storm at the beginning of 2019 when his joint track with Lee So-Ra, “Song Request,” debuted at No. 2 on Billboard‘s World Digital Song Sales chart (dated Jan. 24), marking Suga’s first entry under his solo stage name.
His “Boy With Luv” collaborator Halsey tapped him for an emotional interlude as part of her Manic album, because the lyrical theme of his Agust D solo project struck a chord with her own deeper emotions.
“I had spent time with them and I had gotten to know a lot of them on an individual level,” she told Apple Music’s Zane Lowe about her relationship with BTS in a Beats 1 interview earlier this year. “I was looking up lyric translations and I was blown away. I was like, ‘This stuff is so introspective.’ The content is about mental health and his inner turmoil. And he’s a really quiet guy in real life, and I was just moved…. Suga probably was the last member of BTS that anyone would’ve expected me to collaborate with and the one whose lyrical approach I felt the most connected to.”
