Charli XCX On New Album: Will She Drop Music in 2020?

Like many creatives living under coronavirus quarantine, Charli XCX is rethinking her creative process.

Yesterday (March 16), Charli revealed Twitter that she’s been working on a follow-up studio album to 2019’s Charli and that the extra free time could speed up the recording process.

“This self quarantine is coming at a time where I was almosttttttt finished with the writing process of my next album,” she wrote. “I had one song left to write and then it was all about finishing and production and artwork etc.”

Charli also divulged some secrets on the so-far-untitled project. It will be shorter than the 15-track, 50-minute Charli and will have fewer featured artists, and a lot of the songs are about “sex and physicality.”

A.G. Cook, the PC Music leader who executive produced and co-wrote much of Charli is involved this time, too. And she’s been “talking about reuniting” with Charli duet partner Chris — aka Christine and the Queens — only this time, a third artist could be involved, too.

Charli also said some of her usual collaborators have been showing coronavirus symptoms, causing sessions to be canceled. However, she’s been considering recording on her own at Cook’s suggestion despite how slow she tends to work (“like boomer slow tbh,” she joked) when she’s by herself.

But at least a taste of the new LP could be here soon. She ended hinting: “Perhaps there’s something I can release during what feels like an imminent lock down period… I’m not sure what yet…but I’m thinking about it.” Find the full post below.

And last but not least, what would a Charli XCX album tease be without resurrecting one of the oldest jokes in Charli fandom?

(It’s a reference to an old unreleased track that’s been leaked many times over).

Fingers crossed for an album on par with Charli’s recent output and for us all to stay inspired, even while our collaborators might feel locked away.
