Gone West, featuring Colbie Caillat, have announced the release of their debut project Canyons, due June 12. All 13 songs featured on the project were written by the quartet, which includes Caillat, Jason Reeves, Nelly Joy and Justin Kawika Young. Today (March 3), Billboard premieres “Slow Down,” the album’s first instant grat track.
Shimmering guitar features and Gone West’s memorable harmonies captivate as the band sings of living in the moment on “Slow Down.” The infectious song features Vince Gill on electric guitar, and was co-written by all four members of the band with Jamie Kenney, who also serves as producer on the track.
“We all live in a mode of planning ahead for the next thing,” Caillat tells Billboard. “It’s really hard to be in the moment by yourself or especially with a person you love and just soak that up. Musically and lyrically, we all knew that we wanted that Southern California/acoustic guitar vibe, so you could imagine driving down the coast on a sunny day, with windows down and the music on.
“We were also so lucky that Vince Gill agreed to lay down the guitar solo; that added a special classic rock feel to the song. We chose ‘Slow Down’ as our instant grat because it’s our favorite song on the album. We feel like it fully represents us as a band sonically, and all four of us sing lead on it. We’ve been playing it live for 6 months now and we get such an incredible response from our fans, it’s time for them to have it.”
In addition to Kenney, Gone West’s debut album includes collaborations with co-writers and producers Liz Rose, Jimmy Robbins, Eric Arjes, Nathan Chapman, Alysa Vanderheym, Tom Douglas and Summer Overstreet. Canyons follows the Triple Tigers Records recording artists’ 2019 debut EP Tides and the release of their debut single “What Could’ve Been.”
