When Ellen DeGeneres welcomed Yoyoka Soma back to her show on Tuesday (May 14), she had a special treat for the 9-year-old drummer: a surprise video message from Soma's favorite rock drummer, Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl.
During the interview through a Japanese translator, Soma told DeGeneres that Grohl was her favorite rock drummer because of his "heavy groove." In addition to sitting down with Ellen for an interview, Soma got behind her kit to drum along with the Foo Fighters song "The Pretender," which hit No. 1 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock and Alternative Songs charts back in 2007.
Following the performance, Ellen shared a video message from Grohl himself, in which he said he had seen Soma drum along to "The Pretender" before and that she's "amazing."
"Keep it up, because the world needs more drummers," Grohl said to wrap up his message.
This isn't the first time Soma has gotten some feedback from a rock legend: Last year, after Soma posted a video of herself drumming along to "Good Times Bad Times," Led Zeppelin frontman Robert Plant said late Zep drummer John Bonham would have been impressed by the then-8-year-old musician. "I think he would be so amazed," Plant told CBC radio program Q in July 2018. "I think he would be so chuffed. It's great."
