David Byrne Details 'American Utopia' LP, Shares New Song

After some info surrounding a new David Byrne album made its way online before the end last year, the art-rock icon has shared the full details behind his forthcoming solo LP American Utopia.

Running 10 tracks in length, the album will arrive on March 9 through Todomundo/Nonesuch. American Utopia marks Byrne’s first LP since 2012’s St. Vincent team-up Love This Giant and his first proper solo album since 2004’s Grown Backwards

As Byrne explained in a statement, American Utopia‘s 10 tracks “attempt to depict the world we live in now. Many us, I suspect, are not satisfied with that world — the world we have made for ourselves. We look around and we ask ourselves — well, does it have to be like this? Is there another way? These songs are about that looking and that asking.”

The album was produced by Rodaidh McDonald (The xx, King Krule, Savages) and was recorded at Byrne’s home studio in New York City, in addition to XL Studios, Oscilloscope and London’s Livingston Studio 1. Collaborators on the disc include Oneohtrix Point Never, Jam City, Thomas Bartlett (a.k.a Doveman), Jack Peńate and more.

Byrne has also fered up a taste what’s to come from the record with the new song “Everybody’s Coming to My House.” Co-written with Brian Eno, the song features Sampha, TTY and Onyx Collective’s Happa Isaiah Barr. You can hear it in the player at the bottom the page.

That’s the album’s cover art above and the tracklist can be found below.

As previously reported, Byrne is set to head out on his “most ambitious” tour since the Talking Heads shows filmed for the classic Stop Making Sense film. While there are so far no confirmed Canadian dates, a press release promises an “extensive world tour announcement” is coming soon.
