Demi Lovato called into the podcast In Bed with Nick and Megan on Sunday (May 24) and opened up about what life was like as a Disney Channel star in the mid-to-late 2000s.
“We grew up on Disney Channel around the same age…Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez], Jonas Brothers, all of them, and even the cast of High School Musical, all of that. Everybody was kind of growing up together.” she told hosts Megan Mullally and Nick Offerman.
“It was this really small group of kids that we really couldn’t relate to a lot of people, so we kind of stuck together. We called it ‘Disney High’ because when there’s only a select few of you that can relate to one another, you start dating each other, you become friends with one another, you fall out with one another and then you break up with one another…It’s just confusing and dramatic, and that’s ‘Disney High’ for you.”
This isn’t the first time Lovato’s recently spoken about her former Disney Channel pals, either. In her May cover story for Harper’s Baazar, the singer revealed that — while she was one-time BFFs with Gomez and famously dated Joe Jonas following Camp Rock mania in 2010 — the only Disney alum she keeps in touch with these days is Cyrus, saying, “She’s awesome, and I love her to death and always will, always have. But I think she’s kind of the only one from that era that I still stay in touch with.”
The star also took part in a Zoom reunion late last month with her co-stars from Sonny With a Chance, the Disney Channel sitcom she starred in from 2009 to 2011. Elsewhere in the episode, Lovato talked about how she met Justin Bieber at a radio station appearance at the start of their careers, her well-documented love for the Bachelor franchise, her mental health advocacy amid the coronavirus pandemic and more.
