Two weeks after his death, DMX’s family and friends will honor him with a public memorial.
The event will be held on Saturday, April 24, at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, X’s former manager, Steve Rifkind tells TMZ. Details are still being figured out, including ticketing and how many people will be allowed inside the 17,000-seat arena, which will have limited capacity due to COVID.
The following day on Sunday (April 25), DMX’s family and close friends will celebrate his life at a private funeral service at a church in the New York City area.
DMX last hit the Barclays stage in June 2019 for one of his final shows at the Masters of Ceremony concert, which also featured Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent, T.I., Fabolous, Cam’ron, and more.
The mayor of DMX’s hometown of Yonkers, Mike Spano, had previously welcomed X’s family to use Yonkers Raceway, the city’s largest outdoor venue, for the memorial service. The city is still planning to honor the rap icon with a possible statue or street name.
On Friday, DMX’s first posthumous track, “Been to War,” was released to streaming services. The song, which also features Swizz Beatz and French Montana, is part of the “Godfather of Harlem” series soundtrack.
DMX, born Earl Simmons, died one week ago on April 9, a week after suffering a heart attack triggered by a drug overdose. He was 50. His family and friends have shared tributes to him including his ex-wife Tashera Simmons and Swizz Beatz.
