On this week’s Billboard Hot 100 chart, “Say So” has glided to the No. 1 spot, and Doja Cat has earned the first chart-topper of her career. So has Nicki Minaj, who hopped on a remix of the pop smashand helped the song reach a new summit.
In a conversation with Billboard senior editor Lyndsey Havens during a whirlwind week, Doja Cat reacts to the momentous achievement, and shares how she celebrated — in quarantine, of course.
“My mom called me in the morning, and she was crying,” Doja Cat says of how she found out “Say So” had hit No. 1 on the chart. “She’s like, ‘I’m crying, and you made it to No. 1!’ And I’m like, ‘Whoa. What?’”
In addition to filling us in on how her whole team, from mom to manager, showed up at her house the night that the chart became official to help her celebrate, Doja Cat described what it was like to have Minaj take part in the “Say So” remix.
“It was a conversation, kind of, for months,” she says. “And I was like, ‘I’d love to have her on a song. I know my fans would love to have her on a song. I always get tweets about it, so.’ It just happened. … They did hit me with like, ‘Hey, guess who got on your song?’ And I’m like, ‘Oh my God.’”
Doja Cat also discussed which artists she’s been listening to in quarantine, her thoughts on competing for Grammys and what fans can expect from her upcoming music (hint: it might just be pirate-themed). Watch above for the full chat.
