He also hints at new song, “Through My Ray Bans.”
Eric Church has resilience on his mind in a moving new video, “Who Will Answer the Call?” The two-and-a-half minute spoken word clip hints at a new song, “Through My Ray-Bans,” while shining a light on the strength of the American spirit.
“Where there once were roars, now there are just echoes. The handshakes and the hugs of yore are now too dangerous,” Church says over shots of empty streets, stages and stadiums mixed with shots of his cheering fans. “But I don’t believe in fear. I don’t believe in panic. I don’t believe, in all its complexity, this damn virus has any idea what it’s up against: the American resolve.”
Steeled by the world, calmed by faith, steadied by song and healed by prayer, Church says “damn right I believe these halls will roar again, these stadiums will be deafening in the answer to this enemy. This silence of now will cower at the noise of soon,” as a track swells behind him amid shots of the singer strumming his guitar on stage and wading into a stadium crowd with a flag draped over his shoulders.
“We shall rage. We shall roar. I cannot wait to see you again… through my Ray-Bans,” he says in a near whisper as the track wells up behind him and he sings, “Everybody’s got their arms around everybody else’s shoulders/ Guarding against the world outside like an army of Friday night soldiers/ The battle wages tomorrow, but tonight we’ve got a drink in our hands/ Wish you could stay the way I see you through my Ray-Bans.”
Church debuted another new track, “Never Break Heart,” at the ACM Presents: Our Country special earlier this month and said he’s finishing the follow-up to 2018’s Desperate Man.
