Facebook and Google will be continuing to have employees work from home for the remainder of 2020, Google chief executive Sundar Pichai and a Facebook spokesperson announced.

Pichai says employees whose work is vital to being in-office, can return in July under enhanced safety measures. Similarly, Facebook will ask certain employees to come in, but they haven’t decided which.

“Facebook has taken the next step in its return to work philosophy. Today, we announced anyone who can do their work remotely can choose to do so through the end of the year,” a spokesman said. “As you can imagine this is an evolving situation as employees and their families make important decisions re: return to work.”

“Most Facebook employees are fortunate to be able to work productively from home, so we feel a responsibility to allow people who don’t have this flexibility to access shared public resources first,” CEO Mark Zuckerberg wrote in a post last month. “I hope this helps contain the spread of COVID-19 so we can keep our communities safe and get back up and running again soon.”

Facebook was originally slated to have all its employees back in offices by July 6 and Google by June 1.
