Fiona Apple has opened up in a new interview with The New Yorker on Monday (March 16) about her long-awaited fifth album, titled Fetch the Bolt Cutters.
In the wide-ranging profile, the iconic singer-songwriter reveals the LP’s title was directly inspired by a line from British crime drama The Fall, when Gillian Anderson’s lead detective calls for the aforementioned bolt cutters to unlock the door to a room where a young girl has been tortured. “Really, what it’s about is not being afraid to speak,” she tells writer Emily Nussbaum.
Apple also speaks out about quitting cocaine after one fateful night at Quentin Tarantino’s house several years ago with the award-winning director and then-boyfriend Paul Thomas Anderson. “Every addict should just get locked in a private movie theatre with Q.T. and P.T.A. on coke, and they’ll never want to do it again,” she jokes in the interview.
While a release date for the long-gestating album has yet to be announced, Apple also unveiled several song titles from the potential track list during the chat, including “Rack of His,” “Heavy Balloon” and “For Her,” the latter of which was inspired by the controversial nomination and confirmation hearings of eventual Supreme Court justice Brett Kavanaugh.
Fetch the Bolt Cutters will serve as Apple’s follow-up to 2012’s The Idler Wheel… and is expected sometime later this year Epic Records.
