The introspective unheard track will benefit the Intensive Care Society.
Florence Welch has a very simple, inspiring message on the chorus to “Light Of Love,” an outtake from Florence + The Machine‘s High as Hope album: “Don’t go blindly into the dark/ In every one of us shines a light of love.” The song, which was released on Friday (April 17), starts out as a hushed piano ballad with an opening verse about a late night of partying that seems to go sideways, leading to some serious introspection.
As the pace slowly picks up through the chorus, soft strings and woodwinds seep through and the realization that the drugs don’t work creeps in while the tempo increases, a chorus of angelic backing vocals swells and a martial drum kick gives the arrangement a majestic swell. “I must not look away,” the chorus sing repeatedly as their voices fade.
“‘Light of Love’ is an unreleased song from High as Hope, it never made it to the record, but I thought I would release it at midnight tonight, as a little token of my love,” Welch wrote on Instagram. “And to raise awareness for the Intensive Care Society, which provides care and support for the incredible doctors, nurses, and healthcare professionals on the front line of this crisis. I will be donating all of my income from this song to the Intensive Care Society. I love and miss you all so much. With you in spirit from South London lockdown.”
