Lunay (real name: Jefnier Osorio Moreno) has come a long way since he was put on our radar in 2018 forming part of Ozuna’s “Luz Apaga” alongside other newcomers Rauw Alejandro and Lyanno.
Venturing out on his own, the Puerto Rican artist then dropped “Soltera” in February 2019, under the wings of Chris Jeday and Gaby Music. Its remix, alongside Daddy Yankee and Bad Bunny, debuted at No. 73 on Billboard’s Hot 100 in May, making it Lunay’s first appearance on the renowned chart.
The urban artist, who has a two-year trajectory at the moment, recently made his first appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live show, where he performed his new single “Fin de Semana,” dedicated to the girls who love the weekend.
This is only the beginning for the rising talent, who is nominated for new artist of the year at the 2019 Latin American Music Awards.
Billboard celebrates Lunay’s 19th birthday today (Oct. 4) with five fun facts you should know.
Being discovered: Lunay, who used to post his freestyle videos on Facebook, was discovered on social media by renowned producers Chris Jeday and Gaby Music. They offered him a record deal and helped launch his career.
His biggest inspiration: Lunay previously told Billboard that his biggest musical inspiration is Daddy Yankee and that his favorite song is, in fact, “Gasolina.”
"Soltera (Remix)": Lunay dropped “Soltera” in February 2019 before Daddy Yankee and Bad Bunny jumped on the remix in May. “My producers reached out to Daddy Yankee and he loved the project,” he told Billboard of the collaboration. “Then, I met Bad Bunny at a hotel in Miami. I left to run errands and when I returned he was already recording his part.”
On the Billboard charts: At only 19 years old and with a two-year trajectory, Lunay has landed many times on the charts. He peaked No. 28 on the Emerging Artists chart dated May 25, 2019. On Billboard Hot 100, “Soltera (Remix)” peaked at No. 73 on May 25. He has two Hot Latin Songs entries: "Soltera" reached No. 3 and "Luz Apaga," with Ozuna, Rauw Alejandro and Lyanno, peaked at No. 26 on Dec. 15, 2018. In addition to two Latin Airplay entries: "Soltera," which is at No. 1 on the current July 13-dated chart, and "Luz Apaga" peaked at No. 48 on Feb. 16.
Coliseo performance in Puerto Rico: When he was featured as Billboard’s Latin Artist on the Rise in July, Lunay said one of his short-term goals was to perform at Puerto Rico’s Coliseo. Fast forward to September 13 and the young artist took that stage by storm during Raphy Pina’s Reggaeton White Concert.
