Here's How Celebs Are Helping Out During the Coronavirus Pandemic

Since the coronavirus outbreak, cities around the country have urged self-isolation in order to help flatten the curve and reduce transmission, resulting in school shutdowns, layoffs, and a plummeting stock market. Now, celebrities are stepping up to help.

In the entertainment industry, musicians have postponed and canceled tours, while events such as awards shows and festivals have also been put on hold. Movie and television sets have also shut down production while Americans hunker down.

With the situation and economy looking more dire with each passing day, celebrities are offering what help they can. Some musicians are sharing their talents, providing livestreams of  performances to keep fans entertained. Others are donating not only their time, but rather their tremendous resources, to provide aid to the less fortunate in their communities and around the world.

Here’s a look at the stars who are giving back during the crisis.

The Weeknd

The artist donated $1,000,000 to COVID-19 relief efforts on June 29, with $500,000 of that going to MusiCares, and the other half to front-line healthcare workers of the Scarborough Health Network.

FKA Twigs

The artist has launched a fundraiser for sex workers in the U.K. whose incomes have been affected by the coronavirus pandemic. The GoFundMe initiative will benefit SWARM Collective, Lysistrata, and the East London Strippers Collective.

i was 19 when i learnt my first pole move, i learnt a back hook spin from a stripper when i was working as a hostess in a gentleman’s club. for those of you who don’t know, hostessing is when one person pays another person for their time, anything from a conversation over dinner to sex work, and the club gets a cut of the fee. my lived experience as a very young woman in these environments has not only informed the strong and formidable woman that i am today, but also a lot of my work as a music and visual artist – sometimes even subconsciously. i feel like now is the time for me to step forward, pay respect, and shine a light on the challenges facing sex workers, especially during these uncertain times. sex workers I know and have met have discipline, craft, talent and work ethic – not only do they deserve better long-term, but their income has been wiped out by the lockdown and many are invisible to the financial aid available to others. there’s a bigger journey in challenging public attitudes, tackling stigma, and fighting for rights and protections – but today I’m inviting you to join me in helping with cash donations to SWARM, Lysistrata and ELSC. these organisations are providing direct financial support to strippers and sex workers, we’ve kicked off the the fund with £10,000 and you can donate at https://www.gofundme.com/f/sexworkermutualaidfunds this week, SWARM @swarmhive Lysistrata @lysistratamccf and ELSC @ethicalstripper will also be taking over my social media channels.

Halsey

The “Without Me” hitmaker donated 100,000 FDA-certified three-ply face masks to four different Southern California-based hospitals: Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Providence Saint Joseph, LAC+USC Medical Center and Martin Luther King Jr. Community Hospital. “Every single day I am in awe of the medical workers on the frontlines,” Halsey wrote on Instagram April 8. “If you are on the frontlines, my heart is with you. And I will be continuing the fight to help you get the support and resources you need.”

View this post on Instagram

Every single day I am in awe of the medical workers on the frontlines. Their determination, selflessness and empathy is the single greatest example of our capacity to love and survive as humans. I am beyond privileged to be self isolating in my home, without the fear and obligation of essential work employment. Without a sick family member to care for. A child to feed. A financial crisis to navigate. So I tried to find a real way to make a difference. I have acquired and purchased 100,000 FDA certified 3 ply masks (with the help of Orange International Inc who sourced the masks for me from a factory in Guangzhou, China) These masks will be distributed to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Providence Saint Joseph, LAC+USC Medical Center, and Martin Luther King Jr. Community Hospital; for the medical professionals and non medical hospital staff who are working to put a stop to this pandemic and help millions of strangers they will never meet. Please continue to stay home, if you can. If you are on the frontlines, my heart is with you. And I will be continuing the fight to help you get the support and resources you need. I am eager to redirect you to @givedirectly – A non-profit that allows you a way to give direct cash payments to vulnerable households in at risk communities, most of whom are single mothers. I will be making a sizeable donation, and encourage you to help in any way that you can. Special thanks to @anthonytomasli and the Li family, @jasonaron, PS Business Management, @fedex, and all the contacts at the hospitals who made this possible.
