Plus, analyzing chart returns for Katy Perry, Cardi B & Miley Cyrus.
Welcome to the Billboard Chart Beat Podcast, where each week co-hosts Gary Trust and Trevor Anderson, from the Billboard charts department, discuss why what's on the charts … is on the charts, while also looking at current chart action in a historical context for even greater insights.
This week, Gary and Trevor recap Lil Nas X's 10th week at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with "Old Town Road," featuring Billy Ray Cyrus, and its chances to tie or break the record for the most time atop the tally.
Meanwhile, our special guest is revered chart vet Howard Jones, who discusses his numerous hits, including his '80s smashes "Things Can Only Get Better," "No One Is to Blame," "Everlasting Love" and more. Jones also muses about his new studio album, Transform.
Jones reflects on never being a critical favorite, despite his success. "It was the optimism of my music that got on critics' nerves," he says. "They'd rather be celebrating something darker. But, it didn't put me off. I didn't stop sticking to what I believe was the right thing to do.
"When the difficult things occur in life, like they do to every person, music should be there to help get you through to the other side, and then you're off and running again."
(The New Wave legend visited Billboard's New York offices ahead of his show at the Nokia Theater in Times Square on June 14. The encore included "Better" and he chuckled at his penchant for a singalong "HoJo whoa-whoa chorus.")
