Quavo and Saweetie are rap royalty in the couple’s new GQ feature, published Thursday (July 16).
Saweetie (real name Diamonté Harper), the USC communications/business student-turned-nostalgic hitmaking rapper, rose to fame with her “Icy Girl” freestyle in 2018. Diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but they don’t always compare to a “glacier boy,” which is how the Migos member described himself in his first-ever Instagram direct message to her.
“I seen her on my Explore page,” Quavo (real name Quavious Marshall) recalled in the interview. “I was like, ‘Damn! Who is this?’ So I did my research and I DM her. I was like, ‘How she going to call herself icy and she don’t talk to me?’ So I slid in her DM. I told her, ‘You an icy girl, you need a glacier boy.'” He also sent the snowflake emoji.
Her response? “I sent him the stir-fry back,” she said in reference to Migos’ No. 8 Hot 100 hit from 2018.
Smooth as ice, Huncho started hanging out with the “My Type” artist, who told writer Gerrick Kennedy while blushing, “He’s always been fine to me.” But all that glitters is not gold, especially when it came to the rappers’ wild first date when she flew out to his Atlanta, Ga. hometown to visit him.
He first brought her to his one of his favorite steakhouses, Stoney River, where he choked on a crab cake. “I’m still getting to know him, so I feel awkward because he’s, like, choking at the table,” Saweetie recalled of the night he had planned out for the two. After dinner, he took her on a tour of the recording studio at Quality Control Music headquarters.
And to cap the evening, they hit the strip club, but not just any strip club: They visited Magic City.
When a fight broke out at the legendary venue, Quavo and Saweetie remembered losing each other in the midst of chaos, much to her chagrin. “I didn’t know if it was on some gang sh–, so it was like, ‘Let’s get to the car!'” he said during the interview. “All this time, I forget I’m having a date! She catches up and cussed me out in front of Magic City.”
But their relationship isn’t measured by riches or how many bags Saweetie carries out of a Rodeo Drive store (“I just give you the bag and let you go,” Quavo says about approving her spending habits in the GQ “Couples Quiz” video). It’s measured by their individual growth, stripping themselves of their stage monikers and flashing the names their mothers gave them.
“Growing up I struggled with communication, and he has taught me to be a better communicator,” she said. “I feel like I’m growing and I’m maturing because of him — not the music, not Saweetie, but Diamonté.”
“When she talk to me and when we started talking to each other, the Saweetie sh– go out the window and the Quavo sh– go out the window. I give her Quavious. I give her what my mama calls me,” he said.
