J Balvin hinted new music was on the way when he dropped his head-bopping, deep-bass “Blanco” (White) in the fall. After kicking off 2020 with the reggaeton song “Morado” (Purple) and then releasing “Rojo” (Red), fans began to speculate that a new album was on the way.
On March 19, in the middle of the global coronavirus pandemic, Balvin dropped his fifth solo studio album Colores, bringing lots of joy and reggaeton to his fans. “Amarillo” (Yellow) was the lead single to launch with the set.
Up to now, five out of eight songs from the album have come with a music video, including “Gris” (Gray), which shows Balvin surrounded by snakes, scorpions, crows, frogs, fire, an elephant and at one point, he’s even drowning.
The clips for “Blanco,” “Morado,” “Rojo,” “Amarillo” and “Gris” have all been filmed by Colin Tilley, giving Balvin’s visuals a cinematographic, monochromatic and edgy vibe.
“The goal was to create different content that would really stand out and that the reggaetón world hadn’t really seen before,” Tilley said to Billboard in a recent interview “Jose is just the definition of a true collaborator.”
Specifying that the forthcoming music video for “Azul” (Blue) is “one of the most ridiculous ideas I’ve probably ever had,” Tilley added: “It’s one of those ideas that you could either seriously hate or love. And that’s what we strive for: You either will love it or hate it. It’s also about the feeling you get from color because when we listen to music, we see colors, you feel a color, and that’s the beauty of music.”
