On this week’s Latin Factor podcast, Billboard editor Leila Cobo presents a candid conversation with the Mexican actor and singer Jaime Camil.
Singer, actor, producer, entrepreneur — we can go on and on when it comes to describing the multi-faceted Camil, who is starring alongside Sandra Echeverría in the film Las Pildoras de Mi Novio (My Boyfriend’s Meds), a Lionsgate/Pantelion Films romantic comedy.
While the film is a comedy, Camil’s character suffers from mental health issues which brings light to a taboo topic still in the Latino community. “We need to talk about this important topic and take it seriously,” Camil says in the podcast.
Describing himself as an “actor who sings,” Camil, who was part of the Academy Award-winning film Coco, first pursued his career as a singer but realized doors were opening for him in the acting realm, but still, he didn’t leave the music scene behind. Toward the end of the film, Camil breaks into song performing Cyndi Lauper‘s “I Drove All Night.”
“I was debating about that scene because I’m not the type of actor that takes advantage of projects to show everything he an do. But this scene is completely justifiable because my character loves to karaoke,” he adds.
Known for his role as the charming Rogelio de la Vega on Jane the Virgin, Camil has also had a successful career off the small and big screen. He’s made a name for himself in Broadway thanks to roles like Billy Flynn in the musical Chicago.
