The artist synonymous with Jarabe de Palo, Spain’s most popular bands, posted a balcony video to announce his return in song.
BARCELONA — After nearly a month of total confinement in Spain, and with no clear end in sight, Jarabe de Palo’s Pau Donés has risen like a phoenix from the ashes to announce his musical comeback.
Donés, the leader of one of the most popular Spanish bands, both in Spain and abroad, posted a balcony video to announce his return in song. The singer and songwriter known for “La Flaca,” “Depende,” “Grita” and other Billboard Latin Songs-charting emotional rock fusion ballads, had publicly said he was retiring from his musical career in after a 20th anniversary tour, which followed his treatment for colon cancer. In January 2019 he posted a video to say “adios,” telling his followers “life is urgent; life is just one and it is now” and “it’s time to do other things.”
He had closed that video by assuring he would at some point return. Jarabe de Palo had since then been absent from stages and social media, with the exception of two sold-out sets the band played in in December 2019 in Barcelona to raise money for cancer research.
On Wednesday night (April 8), there was a new video was posted on Jarabe de Palo’s YouTube channel: “I’m back,” Donés sang, whistling and playing his guitar while he glanced at a piece of paper on which he’d jotted down lyrics:
“….Vuelvo, porque la música de nuevo en mi cabeza ha vuelto.
Vuelvo, porque vuelve a ser la hora de compartir sentimientos.
Vuelvo, porque pisar el escenario es en lo único que pienso.
Vuelo a ser lo que siempre he querido ser…”
(“I’m back because the music has returned inside my head.
I’m back, because it’s time to share feelings again.
I’m back, because stepping on a stage is the only thing I think about.
I’m back to being who I always wanted to be.”)
While it could be a while until Donés and Jarabe de Palo actually perform on stage in front of a live audience, news of his comeback made headlines in Spanish newspapers on Thursday.
