John Legend Clarifies How He Really Feels About Kanye West These Days

If it seemed like John Legend was talking smack about Kanye West in an interview for the December issue of Vanity Fair, The Voice coach wants to make it very clear that that was not his intention.

After some interpreted Legend's description of his current relationship with his former producer West as being somewhat strained, Legend issued a series of tweets on Wednesday night (Oct. 30) clarifying his remarks.

"I get why people want to make this a thing. But I was explaining to the reporter how I've seen people I love reacting to the deaths of their mothers," Legend wrote of his comments in the magazine, in which he appeared to distance himself from West when he said, "I’m not trying to disown Kanye because I still love him and love everything we’ve done together creatively. But we were never the closest of friends."

In his tweets, Legend explained that he was "thinking specifically of my own mom, Chrissy's mom and others." As he said he explained in the article, he wasn't trying to disown 'Ye now that they've disagreed publicly and privately about politics.

"I think what was always challenging about it was Kanye has never been political,” Legend told VF about the back-and-forth he had with West after Kanye made their private texts public. “I don’t think he knows one way or another what policies of Trump’s he likes. He just kind of embraced Trump’s blow-it-all-up spirit and the energy of himself being countercultural in supporting him.”

Legend said in the article he was just "clarifying that I had no private knowledge that equipped me to speculate on his grieving process and how that related to mine."

At press time it did not appear that West had responded to Legend's tweets.
