John Legend brought his sultry tones to the Tiny Desk (at-home) stage.
NPR has reimagined its popular Tiny Desk concert series as the coronavirus continues to spread, but Legend was up for the quarantined challenge, transforming a room in his house into the perfect space for his band, complete with a piano, a full instrumental set-up and stools for his back-up singers.
The crooner ran through a number of hits from his latest album, Bigger Love, including “Ooh Laa,” “Wild,” “Conversations in the Dark” and the title track.
“I wrote all these songs before the pandemic, before we saw folks marching in the streets, mourning the life of George Floyd, expressing their outrage,” Legend explained. “And all these songs were written at a bit of a different time in the world and in the United States, but some of these songs feel even more appropriate now, like we need them more now than we did even when I wrote them. This song, ‘Bigger Love,’ is about the power of love to get us through tough times, the idea that when you have love, it makes you more resilient, makes you more hopeful and we all need a little dance break too.”
