Though Kevin Gates was released from prison at the beginning of the year, nearly half way through, he has still not been home. The Louisiana rapper’s wife, Dreka Gates, hit social media to give his fans an update and apologize for him missing upcoming shows.
“The Illinois Department of Corrections has prevented Kevin from leaving the state of Illinois,” she said. “He isn’t even allowed to come home to California where we live. Since he was released in January, he has not been able to come home not one time.”
Gates was scheduled to appear in Dallas for the city’s 2018 Jmblya Festival today (May 4). He was also set to do shows in Austin and Houston, Texas before heading to the Common Ground Music Festival in July.
However, the rapper will be missing both performances, though he is no longer being held at East Moline Correctional Center. His nine month stint ended January 10, but according to Dreka, he’s still in Illinois.
She did say that she and Gates’ team are doing everything possible to bring the “Really Really” rapper home and back to “doing what he loves to do.” Dreka also revealed that fans can expect new music.
“He’s in the studio going like really really hard right now,” she said. “So, you guys will hear from him like really soon.”

TMZ broke the story of Gates’ release, reporting that after several false alarms he was finally coming home after serving a sentence for kicking a fan at a 2015 concert in Flordia and an unrelated weapons charge.
As UK Hip HopTalk previously reported, Gates kept his head up, working on music as he’s locked away. He was even said to be orchestrating the release of a semi-autobiographical music video that seems to tell the story of Gates and his wife dealing with his incarceration. The video ended with a message of hope from Gates himself:
“In the name of the Most Gracious Most Merciful
“Dear Loyal Family, Disallow yourselves to be troubled in my time of absence. All of the great ones who came before and will come after me: Have had to go through this.
“By this I’m speaking in reference to hardship. A great a person is measured by all of the great tests they can undergo and still remain true to who they are. With that being said ‘I’m Him.’ I love you all. In closing, I remain the same.”

Gates’ wife Dreka also shared a similar message to his fans, asking that they pour their energy into the idea of Gates being allowed to come home.
“To everyone that’s rooting for Kevin right now, thank you but please shift your thoughts, prayers, energy, etc. towards the idea of Kevin being home and enjoying his life as a free man,” she said. “Do not dwell on the things that have been put out by the media. Their only goal in anything is to grab/seek attention, not necessarily to release information that is factual.”
Barring the arrests, Gates’ trajectory has been trending steadily upward. His Luca Brasi Story mixtape and the studio album Islah were both critically and commercially successful. The Baton Rouge rapper looked poised to make the leap into the upper echelons of hip-hop before his stints in prison put the brakes on it. Hopefully, Kevin’s been writing and will come straight out of prison with some new material for his long-suffering fans.
