Keith Urban’s new single “When God Whispered Your Name” comes to life in his latest video, which Billboard premieres today (April 2). Directed by Jennifer Massaux, the four-minute clip vividly captures the sense of isolation in a dark, lonely place juxtaposed with finding one’s way to the light among a stunning backdrop.
“That dark and lonely place, was underneath a warehouse in Nashville, literally the darkest, dank and smelly place,” Urban explains. “We spent the whole morning there shooting everything that you now see in the first part of the video.”
As the soaring ballad of love continues, Urban finds himself in a much better place: atop a boulder with a picturesque view outside of Lancaster, Calif. While the setting transforms the song’s optimistic message, it was unsettling to Urban, who is seen on top of a mountain.
“Playing guitar atop a boulder is definitely not a great idea. You just kinda lose yourself in what you’re doing, and every minute or two you realize what you’re doing, and you think, ‘I better not fall off this big a– boulder,’” he admits. “For me, a good music video takes the song to another level. It maybe gives the song a bit more dimension and hopefully we’ve done that with this one.”
