Lancey Foux Takes a Trip on New Album, ‘LIFE IN HELL’

Lancey Foux has released his sixth studio album, LIFE IN HELL, a psychedelic trap escapade charged with high energy beats and the rapper’s most varied work to date.

Teased since the tail end of 2021, Foux’s latest record feels like a larger step in his career. Known for his speaker-splitting rage-trap raps, LIFE IN HELL brings the familiar sound across the 22 tracks; highlights such as “Lancey or Lancey”, “Sun Moon” and “World on Fire” are right in line with typical offerings. But it is the softer side of LIFE IN HELL that grants Lancey’s best songs to date. Opening cut “Spirit of X2C” is an ethereal piano ballad. “Lies Will Set You Free” is layered with focused subject matter and emotional weight. “Casino Royale / Thank You” has minimal Auto-Tune that finds Lancey at his most humane. With both pockets combined, the record is able to please existing fans and attract new ones.

Guest appearances include Kaytranada, 070 Shake and Jah$tar. Kaytranada produces another album highlight, “High Grade”, while GOOD Music’s 070 Shake leads the blissful interlude “Now > Then”. Aside from these moments, the East London artist carries the record’s bulk, singing and rapping over his most assorted production choices to date.

The album title could easily be interpreted as satanic, however LIFE IN HELL is a reference to the ‘Hell on Earth’ trope, which finds Lancey critical of the immoral environment we inhabit.
