Lil Nas X took his horse down memory lane on Sunday for the one-year anniversary of his No. 1 hit “Old Town Road” remix, featuring Billy Ray Cyrus.
“1 year ago today i dropped a remix to old town road with billy ray cyrus,” Nas X tweeted. “i knew it would be successful but DAMN did it change EVERYTHING! can’t express how much this song has done for me. thank u to everybody who made this happen!”
The 20-year-old artist shared a short clip of him and Cyrus hunkered down in the studio, perfecting the sensation they had on their hands. Lil Nas X described the 58-year-old country star’s contribution as “the perfect conclusion” to “Old Town Road,” but Cyrus emphasized how this only marked the beginning for the bubbling rapper.
“You’re a light in this world, man. You’re gonna shine,” he told Lil Nas X in the video. “People are gonna see you from all over the universe.”
The “Achy Breaky Heart” crooner added his heartfelt message Twitter on Sunday, sharing a minute-long video of him recording his verse. “Happy 1 year anniversary to #OTR! @LilNasX thank you for taking me on this crazy ride with you! You really do light up the world!”
The first of many “OTR” remixes peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on April 13, 2019, and didn’t relinquish the throne until Aug. 24 — a record 19-week streak that’s never been heard of before on the all-genre tally.
