With a song like “Twinkle Twinkle” out today (March 11), listeners might think Margo Price might be singing about the sweet praises that come with stardom. But she sets out to do the opposite in her fuzz rock single.
“Twinkle Twinkle” will shine on her upcoming third studio album That’s How Rumors Get Started, which was produced by Sturgill Simpson in Los Angeles, Calif. and will be released May 8 as part of her Loma Vista Recordings debut. The country star recorded alongside an epic band assembled by Simpson, including guitarist Matt Sweeney (Adele, Iggy Pop), bassist Pino Palladino (D’Angelo, John Mayer), drummer James Gadson (Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye), and keyboardist Benmont Tench (Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers)
“I feel like it’s been a long time coming… I had a baby and felt like I fell off the face of the earth for a while. We live in strange times but I hope this brings a little light to the dark corners of the world,” the 36-year-old singer wrote on her Instagram today (March 11) to announce That’s How Rumors Get Started, which fans can pre-order here.
The 10 original songs on the album, including previously released single “Stone Me,” explore the trials and tribulations of not just fame, but motherhood, relationships, gentrification in Nashville, and more personal themes she’s reflected on over three years since her last LP All American Made.
Price cut most of the album in LA’s EastWest Studios while she was pregnant with her baby daughter Ramona Lynn Ivey. “They’re both a creation process,” she said in a press release. “And I was being really good to my body and my mind during that time. I had a lot of clarity from sobriety.”
Price used her candid, backstage conversation with Marty Stuart about artists’ struggle to juggle touring, TV appearances and other treasures as inspiration for her stirring new single. Afterward, her four-hour-long text thread with the prolific music video director Matthew Daniel Siskin (Father John Misty, Beyoncé) helped develop the video’s nostalgic magazine collage-style aesthetic to capture the country singer’s chaos.
