Ahead of the release of the upcoming Barbie movie, Architectural Digest has released a tour of the film set guided by none other than Margot Robbie. As seen in the trailers, the scene is completely doused in pink, so much so that it caused a paint shortage of the particular fuchsia pink hue which was sourced from Rosco.
Barbie’s Dream House takes inspiration from Palm Springs midcentury modernism with slides replacing stairs, few solid walls in sight, and no fire or water. Robbie explains that things are intentionally 2D to be obviously artificial but still very satisfying. An example is the fridge which features a mix of things that are physically there and decals, taking how it would look if it was a Mattel product.
During the tour, we also get to hear from director Greta Gerwig as well as production designer Sarah Greenwood and set decorator Katie Spencer. As Barbie was invented in 1959, the team felt it could ground everything in that ’50s and ’60s soundstage musical look, featuring “wonderfully fake, but emotionally artificial spaces.â€
“I want everyone to feel like they can reach under the screen and touch everything,†says Gerwig.
Barbie is set to hit theaters on July 2.
