Maroon 5 Paid Loving Homage to Kobe Bryant During Super Bowl Weekend Gig

Adam Levine held up a Lakers No. 24 jersey during the performance of ‘Memories’ at Miami’s American Airlines Arena on Saturday night (Feb. 1).

Maroon 5 paid homage to late Los Angeles Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant on Saturday night (Feb. 1) at their Bud Light Super Bowl Music Fest gig in Miami's American Airlines Arena.

Playing on a bill with Dan + Shay, the native Angeleons took a moment during their run through the wistful recent single "Memories" to tribute the basketball icon, who died on Jan. 26 in a tragic helicopter crash that also took the lives of Bryant's teenage daughter Gianna and seven others.

Singer Adam Levine pulled out a Kobe No. 24 jersey and held it up at the beginning of the show and the stage was bathed in Lakers purple as he told the crowd, "I don't know if I'll make it throgh this one with all my emotions intact," asking the crowd to help by singing along as some in the audience shouted "Kobe! Kobe! Kobe!" "Needless to say I think we know who this song is dedicated to."

During the show, Levine also shared his joy at not being on the field on Sunday (Feb. 2) during halftime of the big game. “I’m just happy we can kind of kick back and hang out down the street and have fun, but still be somewhat away from the madness,” said the singer, whose band headlined last year’s Super Bowl halftime show in Atlanta amid some criticism. “Now that (expletive) is over. Now we’re loose and we can have a good time."

M5 weren't the only ones paying homage to Bryant over the weekend. Guns N' Roses performed their cover of "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" the night before during the Bud Light event.
