Dad Ethan Hawke praises the “Stranger Things’ star’s tunes as “gorgeous.”
Maya Hawke was kind of flying under the radar until she broke out this year as Robin Buckley on Stranger Things. Now the daughter of actors Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke — who showed off some impressive pipes when she belted "Total Eclipse of the Heart" in the recent third season of the hit Netflix paranormal drama — is prepping the release of her debut two-song single.
Hawke, 21, released the double-single on Friday (Aug. 16), "To Love a Boy" and "Stay Open," which feature her lyrics and music by Grammy-winning songwriter/producer Jesse Harris (Norah Jones). Both showcase her dreamy voice over subtle, jazzy acoustic guitar. "I want to love a boy the way I love the ocean/ Wish I was not afraid of all I have that's broken/ I know I must behave to contain all my emotion/ But I want to love a boy the way I love the ocean," she sings on "Boy."
Here is a snippet from one of the first two songs I’m going to release (lyrics by me music by Jesse Harris) and preview of the cover for this A side/B side single. They will be released on August 16th and I’m playing a show to celebrate at the Sultan Room in Williamsburg on August 21st. Link for tickets is in my bio.
Hawke will play a show to celebrate the release of the songs on Aug. 21 at the Sultan Room in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The singer/actress revealed on Sunday (Aug. 18) that the video for "Boy" is slated to debut on Monday (Aug. 19).
The 2:24 "Stay Open" is a similarly pastoral acoustic ballad with brushed drums, acoustic guitar and a trotting pace. "Things will change they always do/ But my heart will stay open for you," she sings over the mid-tempo beat. Listen to both songs in full below.
Dad Ethan gushed about the "two gorgeous new songs," teasing that a full-length album is coming soon.
