Tarique Peters, a New Yorker on vacation in Hawaii, was arrested for violating the state’s strict 14-day self-quarantine for tourists. Peters was caught after posting pictures of himself on social media in Waikiki.

In the pictures, Peters can be seen surfing, sunbathing, and more on public beaches.

Peters’ mother spoke with the NY Post about her son’s decision to travel: “He had no business going there,” Marcia Peters said. “The rules are all over. I told him not to travel. I told him not to go. I told him to cancel all his vacation [plans] because he knows what’s going on in America and all over.”

“Where am I going to get $4,000 from,” she said, referring to a $4,000 bail that her son is being held on. “I don’t know that he has $4,000. He ain’t rich like that. We gonna have to work something out.”

She adds that her son usually “does the right thing.”

“Why put his information all over the internet where people are putting all sorts of threats next to his pictures,” added Peters’ sister, who tells the NY Post she works in law enforcement and lives in the Bronx. “Something like that could lead to suicide.”
