Noname is putting the spotlight on all the “top selling rappers” who have yet to speak on the police killing of George Floyd. Ever since footage of George’s death, which shows a police officer kneeling on the 46-year-old black man’s neck until he stopped breathing, spread like wildfire this past week, many have been rightfully outraged. For the past several days, protests have been taking place both in Minneapolis where the murder occurred, and in other cities across the country in an effort to fight for justice against police brutality. Petitions and donation links have been circulating on social media, as well, allowing people who cannot protest to help the cause with their money and signatures.

While tons of important work is being done, rapper Noname, who had already called on her “celebrity” followers to match her $1,000 donation to the Minnesota Freedom Fund, couldn’t help but notice the radio silence coming from some of the voices one might expect would speak up on these injustices. On Friday (May 29th), she tweeted about who she feels is really showing up for the black community, and who isn’t.

“Poor black folks all over the country are putting their bodies on the line in protest for our collective safety and y’all favorite top selling rappers not even willing to put a tweet up,” she wrote. “N*ggas whole discographies be about black plight and they no where to be found.”

While there are certainly some artists who have yet to speak up (at least on social media), many rappers have been using their platforms to shed light on the matter, such as , , and more.
