Last night, Playboi Carti surprised the masses with the release of his sophomore album Die Lit. Boasting an impressive array of guest appearances from Skepta, Travis Scott, Nicki Minaj, Pi’erre Bourne, Lil Uzi Vert, Bryson Tiller, Young Thug, Young Nudy and more, Die Lit seemed like, at least on paper, an improvement over its predecessor. After the success of “Magnolia,” it seemed likely that we’d be hearing from a more experienced and, dare I say wise, Playboi Carti. Now that the album is mere hours old, it would appear that first impressions are painting a different picture. At least, as far as our users are concerned.
While scanning through the initial reactions, it appeared that many have grown tired of Carti’s seeming lack of evolution. Citing abuse of ad-libs and generally phoned-in lyrics, the consensus seemed to be that of disappointment. Others simply seemed fatigued by the project. To be fair, a decent number of users seemed to enjoy Die Lit’s vibe, claiming Carti was never meant for those seeking lyricism. Naturally, the discourse surrounding the album was divisive, despite leaning toward the negative end of the spectrum.
Still, that’s not to say the album won’t be a grower. What do ya’ll think? Check out some of the notable first reactions below, as provided by our community and beyond.
