Prince died four years ago Tuesday (April 21), but his music continues to live on through his biggest hits.
He had an impressive stay on the Billboard Hot 100, with a notable smattering of those best-selling tracks coming from his exalted 1984 movie Purple Rain, which critics claimed to be the cornerstone of his career, of the ’80s and of pop-rock history. The opening tracks of the dual-disc soundtrack — “Let’s Go Crazy” and “When Doves Cry” — landed at No. 1 in 1984 and stayed there for two and five weeks, respectively. “Kiss,” “Cream” and “Batdance” also checked into the Hot 100 penthouse, but the slow burn to the full-on sizzle of his new wave meets synth-pop tracks still light up fans’ playlists today.
