The virtual clubs on Instagram Live might be coming to an end after a rep from the company revealed that DJ’s might be violating Instagram’s deals with music publishers.
The very idea of going out to a packed and sticky nightclub is enough to spark concern in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. Over the past few weeks, DJ’s have hosted live, virtual sets from the comfort of their home in response to the social distancing measures. It became a fun way to keep the vibe of the nightlife going, even though no one is allowed to go out.

According to Page Six, this could come to an end in the near future. This idea of livestreaming sets became new to Instagram and apparently, it’s causing complications within their deals with music publishers. “The product is being used in a way that it hasn’t been used [before],” an Instagram insider said “We’re looking at the relationship with partnerships [with the music industry and Instagram users] on all sides, and all things are factored in.”
Short snippets are accepted but DJs are playing full songs. Some of them have been flagged such as Marjorie “DJ Mad Marj” Gubelmann. She revealed that she kept getting booted from spinning on her livestreams. “I’ll keep going until we finish,” she said. “I’m going to turn it off before they turn me off.”
IG has since posted guidelines for their live streams with one rule pointing out that “people also have access to a library of custom music and sound effects at no cost using [parent company] Facebook’s Sound Collection.”
