Rihanna Reveals Why She Turned Down the Super Bowl Halftime Show

Rihanna graces the cover of Vogue's November issue, and in the accompanying interview published on Wednesday (Oct. 9), RiRi spoke on the state of her forthcoming album, her relationship status, and why she turned down the opportunity to be the NFL's halftime performer at the Super Bowl last year.

With the Navy chomping at the bit to get their hands on R9, Rihanna wouldn't dare touch on a release date, but did expand on the project's reggae inspiration. “I like to look at it as a reggae-inspired or reggae-infused album. It’s not gonna be typical of what you know as reggae. But you’re going to feel the elements in all of the tracks," she said. "Reggae always feels right to me. It’s in my blood."

Even as she continues to dabble in other creative outlets and industries to expand her empire, fans shouldn't be worried, as Rihanna doesn't foresee herself ever not doing music. "Music is, like, speaking in code to the world, where they get it. It’s the weird language that connects me to them," the Anti artist explained. "To cut that off is to cut my communication off. All of these other things flourish on top of that foundation."

RiRi also discussed her long-rumored relationship with Hassan Jameel and says she "without a doubt" wants kids at some point. "Yeah, I’m dating,” she said. “I’m actually in an exclusive relationship for quite some time, and it’s going really well, so I’m happy.”

As far as last year's Super Bowl, Rihanna confirmed that she denied the NFL's offer to stand in solidarity with embattled former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick. "I couldn’t dare do that. For what? Who gains from that? Not my people," RiRi stated. "I just couldn’t be a sellout. I couldn’t be an enabler. There’s things within that organization that I do not agree with at all, and I was not about to go and be of service to them in any way."
