Ruen Brothers 'Break The Rules': Exclusive

Rising U.K. rockabilly duo Ruen Brothers premiered their new song “Break the Rules” for Netflix’s upcoming original movie The Half of It on Thursday (April 30), exclusively to Billboard.

On the swaying track, the siblings detail the blossoming odd-couple friendship at the heart of the coming-of-age story, which stars Leah Lewis and Daniel Diemer. “We’ve been waiting and watching/ Waiting for our hearts to take the stage, see the lights/ Oh it feels right/ Right next to you/ Break the rules/ And oh, how hearts hold wonder/ Oh, how they roll like thunder/ Oh, is it right to break the rules?” Henry Stansall croons over glockenspiel, strings and guitar played by his brother Rupert.

“We wrote ‘Break The Rules’ for a melancholic montage part of the film where the main characters are grappling with difficult emotions and choices while going about their daily lives,” the Ruen Brothers tell Billboard. “The initial rough idea was to write a gentle country/Americana dance song. We love writing in this genre, it’s similar to the slow dances we’d play at pubs in our home town to give the pub-goers a moment of cheeky romance, and we thought it was appropriate for the film’s similarly rural setting.”

The soundtrack for the heartfelt LGBTQ teen drama is also set to include three other songs from the Ruen Brothers, including “Flying Cars” and “Takin’ It Easy (Ru Demo Take)” off their forthcoming sophomore studio set, which is set to arrive later this year.

The Half of It premieres on Netflix on Friday (May 1). Following the film’s premiere, the duo are also set to host a live stream performance on Warm Audio’s Facebook page on Saturday (May 2) at 7:00 p.m. EDT.
