Ryan Tedder Talks ‘Songland’ Conception, Performs ‘Rescue Me’ on ‘Fallon’: Watch

He also shares that he ignored Paul McCartney with a “new number, who dis?” text.

Ryan Tedder stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Thursday (June 13) to talk about his new show Songland.

After Fallon listed off Tedder's songwriting credits — which included Beyoncé's "Halo," Adele's "Rumor Has It" and more — the singer-songwriter went on to share that the conception for Songland had been brewing for about five years. It was actually the result of his almost replacing Adam Levine, who needed a break, as a judge on The Voice four years ago, which obviously didn't happen.

"All of the recording artists — all the Beyoncés, the Frank Sinatras of the world — without the songs, you don't have the artists," the OneRepublic frontman said.

He went on to explain how everyone has been obsessed with cooking shows. "The top two most-consumed things in the world are food and music. But there hasn't been a show about how you cook music. So that's what this show is."

"We're letting you in on an actual writing session," Tedder continued, before showing a preview of next week's episode which features the Jonas Brothers.

Tedder also admitted that he accidentally ignored Paul McCartney not too long ago. "His manager said 'Paul is going to call you in the next month.' Cool, so I'll leave my phone on. Then I'm at a lunch, I get a call from a +44, it's the U.K., I hit ignore. Calls back, I hit ignore again… I forgot! This was three weeks later. I hit ignore for the third time and then I get a text saying 'Hey Ryan, free to talk?' and I write back, 'new number, who dis?'" Then he eventually realizes it's McCartney and confirms that he is indeed, the best.

After the interview, OneRepublic showed off their writing chops and performed their buoyant single "Rescue Me," the first song they've released since 2018's "Connection."
